Commonwealth Games: Where the money could’ve gone

Commonwealth Games

Money Games

I feel proud when I realise that India is hosting the Commonwealth Games. As an Indian, it inculcates a sense of patriotism in me.

But the moment I read about the expenditure on the Games – a whopping 30,000 crore and counting – the sense of patriotism evaporates.

India is a country where sports still languishes – apart from cricket, other sports still grapple hard to get their due and most sportspersons have to put up with lack of adequate finances and recognition unlike luckier counterparts like Vijender Singh (boxing), Pankaj Advani (billiards) and Saina Nehwal (badminton) to name a few.

Sample this: In July 2009, Indian hockey goalkeeper Baljit Singh sustained a career-threatening eye injury while he was practicing at a camp at Pune. He was treated at the AIIMS and later in the US.

Hockey India footed the bill as he was unable to fund his treatment in the US.

In January 2010, the disgruntled national men’s hockey players staged indefinite boycott of the World Cup preparatory camp to protest the non-payment of their dues and incentives.

Barely a week later, even women’s hockey players staged similar protests to demand their dues.

And this is no flash in the pan, there’re lot more issues and gloomy stories that go unnoticed.

While a cricketer, with a minor injury, rushes abroad for the best possible medical attention, other sportspersons lack that financial might.

The reason being that most of the sports get neglected due to lack of funds and infrastructure and  sportsmen/women struggle to find a foothold even to make a decent living.

And now after Urban Development Minister S Jaipal Reddy comment that a total of Rs 28,054 crore have been spent on the Commonwealth Games, out of which Rs 16,560 crore was given to the Delhi Government for upgrading the capital infrastructure and building of various stadia, I can hardly fathom the necessity for a country like India to host a event of this magnitude?

When sports in our country suffers due to lack of funds, and sportspersons lead an awful life, it was hardly necessary for us to conduct the Games.

Even Mani Shankar Iyer, former Sports Minister and a staunch opponent of Commonwealth Games, had voiced his concern.

“Those who are patronising the Games can only be evil. They cannot be God. Thousands of crores are being spent on circuses like these while the common children are being deprived of basic facilities to play,” Iyer said.

Think of it.

If we could have used all the money allotted for staging the Commonwealth Games for developing sports alone, our country would have benefited.

The Indian Olympic Association could have toed on these lines to benefit Indian sports:

1) Having a Comprehensive National Sports Policy
2) Providing Funds to State Associations of various bodies
3) Upgrading infrastructures in collaboration with Sports Authority of India (SAI)
4) Form a committee to spot talents at the grassroot level – be it football, hockey, archery, badminton, swimming, boxing or any other sport
5) Provide quality coaching etc…

These are few suggestions that could have benefited Indian sports as a whole, but now with a few of the Organising Committee members of the CWG involved in unbridled corruption, we can hardly believe that there will be a proper utilisation of the taxpayers’ money.

I even doubt, with news of rampant CWG corruption deals coming to the fore each day, whether the Games will be successful at all.

I doubt whether India can project itself successfully as a tourist hub due to this Games.

Once the Games get over, there may be lot of post-mortems.

But one thing will remain the same.

Indian sports will struggle to find that healing touch and its sportsmen/women will sulk in despair for that decent living…

  1. Ask kalmadi’s kins or the Swiss. Ok !

  2. There are those who say that this will leave useful structure, long after the games are over. They cite the Asiad games. On the question why India wants to stage this, when India itself is woeful in sports, the decision comes from the desire to project India as an emerging power like China. China has the substance, both in sports and in the economy, but India does not. The CWG is not going to change that. It is a country racked by corruption, casteism and communalism. Till India feeds, clothes and educates its people, there is no point in aspiring for world image through sports.

  3. Truely said, even why need to go a broad for medical treatment, why not provide similar treatment at home, even lot more money wasted in healthcare every day, how to provide matching precise treatment find out at www skanhealthcaresystems.info

  4. PL. FORGIVE ME FOR MY BANTER SOMETHING THORNY IS UP MY ASS PLUS I HAVE MENTAL ISSUES AND MY PARENTS ARE COUSINS…WHERE ARE MY PILLS!!!!

  5. CWG was a Titanic which was BOUND to sink as it was planned & executed by a bunch of arrogant hot heads, who still think they KNOW EVERY THING and Indians should just lump whatever they dish out! How badly the labour have been treated (42 have died) while engaged in the construction of infra-structure facilities is Clear Barometer of the devil may care attitude of CWG Organizing Committee. Even NOW, CWG can be pulled back from BRINK – if Kalmadi is removed and Shridharan of Metro and Narayana Murthy of Info system execute CWG!

  6. Thanks to the editor this time , in bringing notice to the development of sports policies as these days corruption & its talk have been going on ? but now is the time to take this govt on accountability of her policies. lets build consensus over the developmental aspect and also pin those guys who are not accountable at all.

  7. Indian sports has no future. The officials are corrupt and they are not serious for the development of sports in the country. No doubt CWG is a waste. all these reports of corruption have made India a bad nation

  8. I totally agree each and every word of the article. We are not a rich nation to host the common wealth games by spending crores and crores. The bitter part is, there are lots of sports and games that are not being encouraged and many players are there with out support to prove their talents. I feel the cricket should be banned for sometime until equal importance is given to other games as well. Wonderful article. Shame, shame!!!

  9. It is so obvious.Money did not come to India, and all the commissions were paid directly into a few accounts in Switzerland,UK and Luxembourg.
No point tracing the beneficiaries, because they all went into fake names and offshore companies accounts

  11. CWG: Corruption Wealth Games.

  12. Hi everyone, after reading these shitty news about India hosting the CWG and the money going away.. Man feel so sad to call myself an indian here in Aboad. The news is every where and India Hosting These big international event SUCKS BIG TIME. COZ INDIA can’t hold any thing big due to the corruption. and more over in Delhi my goodness. I was Bragging about the CWS to the people here and proving it that we can do such big events. But the country let us down and just hoping that the GAMES START on time. and they would be able to held the games in a proper manner. Now this downslope will not bring any big major event in India.. Sad to be still called Third world country.. PLEASE INDIA CHANGE..

  13. Some in Govt. new lots of Indian will take this as a national pride. So , here is the chance to make some quick buck. Theses people are well wired on how to act, execute and siphon off the money. Nothing surprising the cost kept going up and up and up. After all this is the area leaders in Indian politicians are well trained for decades.

  14. Since 48years I heard about the corruption at higher level take it Bofor, Lalus grass (chara) Jaya = wealth many many many gotalas.
Nobody been punished. And if taken to CBI or court it takes years and years for nothing , further spending to get the truth is more than siphoned.
This politician in India are KING . They are corrupt, murderer, rapist terrorist……
If a Simple citizen do anything wrong they are punished high handedly.
I AM ASHEMED to be an Indian. See JAPAN after the world war II they come up in every field and we after independence : politician swendeld the economy by depositing in SWISS…. and bemani account thro Marutitus etc., This politician devide us by CASTE/RELIGION / SC/ST and rule us and make their money. ONLY GOD CAN SAVE US

  15. Periyar PundaiMagan

Muslims have destroyed India – MM singh and congres are traitors – Anroshan is a Motherfucker

    • I thought Brahmins destroyed India with the wretched caste system. That is why Periyar said “when you see a snake leave it, when you see a Brahmin, kill him”. We need a cultural revolution where Hindus and Muslims will exterminate Brahmins like you.

  16. We are missing the big point. Why are politicians sitting in all positions of power? Can’t we find sportsmen of repute to run games? Can’t we have the
people with integrity (There are many Sreedharans waiting in the wings) to build infrastructure? Can’t we have processes taking care of most working level decisions? Why all decisions have to be discretionary? And why should that discretion always rest with political/bureucratic class?

No point talking of CWG only. This is a systematic failure. Till we learn to vote with our brains and not for personae, it will remain the same.

Still proud to be an Indian. I have the honour of wearing the same tag as Gandhi, Nehru, Patel, NR Narayanamurthu, Sridharan, JRD, GD Birla, Bhagat Singh, and so many others did/do with so much faith and elan.

  17. true, true, true…….. We are just puppet and these corrupt politicians are our Raja. We are playing on their direction. Jago India Jago, Abhi Bhi Der Nahi Hui Hai

  18. What ever u write IT WILL FALL ON DEAF YEARS,AS THE PRIME MINISTER DOES NOT BOTHER TO make inroads to find the truth.Every one is only interested in only saving their parties.Well there is NO CHANCE OF ANY SPORTS PERSONALITIES FROM OUR COUNTRY EXCEPT ONE OR TWO I Shall be HAPPY IF THE GOLD MEDALS ARE GIVEN TO THE MANMOHANS/KALMADIS/GILLS AND OTHER CORRUPT ORGANISERS. FOR MAKING A FUN OUT OF THIS PRESTIGIOUS GAMES.tHE QUEEN OF U.K HAS DONE A MISTAKE IN AWARDING THE GAMES TO INDIA,AND WAY THIS IS A LESSON FOR OTHER SPORTING EVENTS,AND I AM SURE THEY WILL HANDLE THE ISSUES BETTER.

  19. In India except sportsmen, all others involved in the sport florish. This is not applicable to Cricket. In the name of promoting and administering sports and games in India all and sundry wo dose not know ABC of the Sports and Games and administartion are making huge money. There is a demand that the persons who have achieved some status in a particular sports/Games only be involved in the promotion/administration does not hold much water. Perforamance on the feild is entirely different from managing from behind. Managment is an art and to be successfull event manager one does not required to be an expert of hat discipline. All the so called Heads of various sports bodies who claim voluntary services should be sacked and it should be entrusted to the professionals with clear cut guidlines towards achievments. We should ask the professionals to bid for coaching/managing discipline stating that we want such and such result in such and such events and if they fail to achieve not only the money paid to them has to be returned but also they should pay certain damages. Unless the promoters/Administrators are not made accountable the scandal like CWG will continue to repeat time and again.

  20. It is shame that sports federations in our country are run by bunch of jokers who have never played any sports or do they have any knowledge of the federation they are holding. These corrupt people get into any of the federations to loot the money and enjoy free international trips. Take the case of IOA, and atheletic federation of India, both Suresh Kalmadi(most corrupt person in the country) and his stooge another corrupt lalit bhanot have no interest of whatsoever in athletics. Though lalit bhanot was a javelin /discuss thrower many years ago, his contributions to atheletics is disgusting. All these 20 years they have amazed huge amounts of wealth and it is high time the govt wake up its eyes to arrest these people and give them severe punishment. We should thank Times Now for atleast bring this at the time of the CWG.

  21. There is a very famous saying in business that”those who do not earn in buying can not earn in selling”. The reputation we have earned before the Games in the form of corruption and mismanagement in organizing things , we can very well understand what we will be able to do during the games. Lot of money has been wasted in organiozing the games which will not benefit any Indian in general. This is all Political in nature. Since it is very late to discuss all these things at this stage, We all hope the games are over without much loss of face.

  22. Why is this hue and cry now. Why didn’t the Govt oppose when we bid for the games, at least they knew that there was lot of money involved. India will not benefit from CWG only few individuals, corrupt and anti-national will benefit. Shame on them….

  23. True and the story won’t change till the time cricket is there. Ban cricket for a while and then see all will be fine

    • Banning cricket is no solution. Banning cricket cant get you a place in FIFA world cup. Maybe you should ban bollywood movies too.

  24. MS Aiyar was right: it’s all about the evil.

  25. IT WILL BE BETTER IF THE CONTRIBUTIONS CONTAIN PARLIAMENTARY LANGUAGE.

  26. Very crafty and well written article. I have a few comments…
It was a good thing to bid for the games and get it.
Corruption looms large in our country at every level. So its not surprising that much amount of money has been lost, Saying that I am happy that Delhi has undergone a massive change in the last 7 years.
Again its due to corruption only that this time we are skeptical of the games. In 1982 when the country was hosting the asian games the whole city was a buzz. I miss that feeling this time though.

  27. i proud to be an indian
